Hi All,
I’m going to be busy on the blog over the weekend so come back and keep checking – there wll be a competition as well as a ‘thank you’ to the person who makes the best contribution (I think Amy is possibly winning at the moment).
(Sophie here: Mr H – when is it that this compitition will come to an end? Who is winning at the moment? I was just wondering so it doesnt matter when you reply
)
Now – what I want to know is :Have you thought about who is going to look at your story? Can you decise or is the whole class looking at the same ‘audience’?
Add a note and let me know…

^ I mean : ‘to the person who makes the best contribution’ < what does THAT mean ?

The bit about ‘contributing’ means writing in the blog and bext contribution is about writing meaningful and helpful comments.
The prize will be an MP3 Player – not an expensive ipod or anything like that but an MP3 player none the less.

Now …. Age ranges.
I am glad that you can choose your own, it’s much more fun. When you think about who you are writing for you have to think about a lot of things for example:
Who do you most want to reach? How are they similar or different to you?
Reading Age – How ‘educated’ are they?
Cultures- Are they all English? religious beliefs, other values.
Gender Not only girls/boys but also consider feminine/masculine.
Special Needs - Partially sighted? Can you use shortcuts? Not patronizing.
Time- How long will they give you before walking away. Brevity. Do you need to capture attention?
Knowledge – What can you ‘assume’ they already know? Acronyms, slang
Values – Will they share similar ideas?
Why - Might they be interested?
Note - you don’t have to include all of these but thinking about it will help you write a good story.

What about an example:
I’m going to choose to create my story for 5 year olds.
Notes:
Young people often have a low attention span and are often easily frightened. I will keep my story very short and make frequent changes to something happens quite often.
They are not usually good readers. I am going to try to reduce the words and make them simple, I will try to add meaning with sounds rather than words.
I want to engage girls particularly because boys will find the ‘hero’ subject very easy to connect with. I won’t kane the story too ‘Dark’ and makesure that Beowulf comes across as a real person and that Grendel isn’t too scary.
I need to find some way of capturing the attention very quickly and saying what the story is about. I will need something early in my presentation that ‘sets the scene’ and captures attention – a good chance for video?
Young people will know about monsters but probably need an illustration to help their imagination. The illustration shouldn’t be too scary – possibly a cartoon monster but definately not realistic
I doubt that 5 year olds will know about Vikings or will they understand about cold bleak lands (they may not have seen snow for example). I must not make the scene to unusual.
Young people might be interested in this because it’s an exciting story. Girls might like the hero to be very caring as well as strong and handsome.

So Tom would have to make his story like that because he is choosing a age range of 5 year olds and Amy and I would have to discribe things in more detail, have realistic pictures and videos & set the scene how it is in the book/film?
